Smokey & Tigger Abandoned Cats

15/06/11: Today I have more great news. Tigger has been parted from Sara for a couple of weeks, because the plan was that he would take part in a new 4+ week medical study, in the hope that his FiV could be eliminated. I have just heard from Kerstin that Tigger has been rejected for the study because his FiV antigen levels are not high enough. This is actually good news, and even better it means that he will move to his new home on Monday, where little Sara will be VERY happy to see him!

22/05/11: Today I have fantastic news of both Smokey and Tigger. The adoptants of little Sara have decided to adopt her best friend Tigger too. They realised how close they were and also fell in love with our charming, friendly boy.

Tigger and Sara ended up in the same foster home, because Sara originally tested positive for FiV too, and even though she later tested negative, she got to stay with her big protector. It was decided Tigger would never pass FiV to Sara because he would never bite her. He looks after her and gives this slightly nervous girl more confidence. She hid when her family visited but Tigger went to tell her it was ok. He then charmed them himself, particularly their son, and accepted cuddles from everyone!

They will move to their new home in about a week, where they will also meet the family’s young kitten. Sweet!!!

AND I also received a great email about Smokey’s recent home check. All is well. This came from the lady who visited him:

“The cat and the people are completely satisfied and happy with each other. Smokey is friendly, curious and trusting. He gets mostly wet food all the best varieties and he likes it much better than dry food, but he is not greedy and stays slim. With the two girl cats next door and a small cat boy he is all right friends. Frequently he invites them all to the Bolt-Stoll’s for dinner. Both his parents are kind women. They said the young cats from next door were terribly thin and they do not have the heart to send them away without eating. Smokey seems to know somehow that they are hungry and then he just brings them home with him because they get something there. Is not that totally sweet? What a great cat, and pretty it is too. I think he’s really great, and he is really the focal point in the lives of his family.
Finally, I can announce to you that is a real happy ending. I was very happy about how happy all are”

21/04/11: Here are even more lovely photos of Tigger in his foster home. He looks brilliant, and to me he seems to have filled out a lot since his first photo, so I’m assuming he is being well spoilt.

Unfortunately his full lab test for FiV was also positive, but this doesn’t mean he cannot have a long and happy life, and while he waits for his forever home, things are not looking too tough for him at all!!!

27/03/11: Yesterday I received some lovely new photos of Tigger looking very contented in his foster home.

He has just been re-tested for FiV in Germany and we are awaiting the results from the lab. This is to check that his original positive result from his quick test was accurate. Here’s hoping that he turns out to be negative after all.

21/03/11: Now I have photos of Smokey, taken by Kerstin in his foster home in Germany. He looks very contented and it is very easy to see why somebody quickly fell in love with him!

17/03/11: An update on these 2 is overdue. They actually travelled together to a foster home in Germany on the January 21st transport.

We always planned to keep them together, but on arrival our 2 boys seemed to fall out. There was no report of fighting from the cattery in Spain, but their foster Mum was unhappy with their relationship, particularly in light of Tigger’s FiV status, so it was decided to separate them.

Not surprisingly, beautiful, healthy Smokey has quickly found his forever home, and I already have great feedback from his adoptant:

“We have the dearest, sweetest hangover the world! we have 3we searched and found. He is so calm and confident as he was with us always, and not for just one day. He was already in the garden and he was blown away, so we then took him back into the house. Thank you very much for this super tomcat,he only has good properties. All the best from Bremen. Jutta.”

Tigger meanwhile is doing well and is happy in his foster home. He WILL find an adoptant but because of his FiV it is likely to take a little longer.

20/11/10: Smokey and Tigger’s story has recently become even sadder than the fact that these lovely affectionate brothers were abandoned by their English family when they returned to the UK.

Whilst struggling to fend for themselves on the street, they appear to have been terrorised by a much more feral Tomcat, and Tigger has received a very nasty bite. If this wasn’t bad enough a recent blood test has shown that through this penetrating wound he has contracted FiV.

I have written before about how FiV cats can live long and happy lives, but this is still sad news and will make finding these boys (now safe in the cattery) a forever home more difficult. The German girls are having to make an exception to their policy of not homing FiV cats with healthy cats.

Tigger and Smokey are very close, and we have decided that it would be unkind to split them up, particularly after all they have been through together. As Tigger is NOT going to attack and bite the brother he loves, the risk of him passing on the disease is virtually non-existent.

These are 2 sweet, gentle cats, and I hope we can find them a home soon.
