Based in Murcia Galgos del Sol are a registered charity who rescue and rehabilitate abandoned and injured galgos for placement in forever homes in the UK, Europe, and USA.
You may or may not be aware that the Galgos are bred solely for hunting, with thousands of galgos abandoned or killed annually at the end of each short season, and as they are not typically considered as pet worthy in Spain and their lives end in less than humane ways either in perreras (kill stations) or abandoned to a life of persecution on the streets.
One ongoing project that Galgos del Sol are passionate about is the education of those in Spain to the plight of the Galgo, and to how good a pet they make. One way they do this is through Billboards locally, and they currently have a Facebook activity called 16 Dogs A Day, which they set up to commemorate 16,000 ‘likes’. It costs you 16€ to submit your Galgos name to go on a billboard, and you do not need to have adopted through GDS.
It seems to me a great way of celebrating your ownership of a Galgo, of supporting the education initiative and lets be honest: giving the arseholes who harm these lovely dogs the finger!!
