If Gessy had been sterilised earlier in her life, nine vulnerable dogs may have been spared the misery they endured.
Even though dangerous winter weather is gripping Romania, Gessy and her eight newborn puppies were cruelly abandoned in the bitter cold with nowhere to find refuge. Before long, four of the pups succumbed to hypothermia.
Today is World Spay Day, but every day is a chance to make a difference in an animal’s life. PETA’s Global Compassion Fund offers support to a network of groups that help animals where they need it most – including in rural villages in Romania, where the companion animal overpopulation crisis is among the worst in Europe.
A single unsterilised dog and her offspring can be responsible for the births of more than 67,000 puppies in just six years. Some will fall prey to fatal neglect, as Gessy’s puppies did, while others will end up at overburdened and underfunded shelters or struggle to survive on the streets. Fortunately, there’s a simple way to prevent such misery: sterilisation. With your gift to PETA’s Global Compassion Fund, you can help power vital surgeries and services that are breaking cycles of suffering.
Thankfully, staff from PETA Germany and its Romanian partner Eduxanima rescued Gessy and her surviving puppies before the deadly weather could claim them. After being provided with the medicine and care they needed, all five were placed up for adoption and now have a chance to spend the rest of their lives in the safety and comfort every dog deserves.
PETA Germany and Eduxanima have helped more than 20,000 animals like Gessy since this vital partnership began – and will assist many thousands more in the months ahead.
