Animals lived in foot-high feces

More Than 400 Animals Were Abused and Neglected on This Farm. Demand Stronger Protections for Animals!

Authorities have arrested a man in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania after he allegedly neglected and abused more than 400 animals on his farm, including birds, ducks, rabbits, guinea pigs, sheep, goats, and a horse. Living in feces that stacked up for feet, the animals apparently did not have access to sufficient food, adequate shelter, or necessary medical care. Investigators even found feces and inches-thick algae contaminating the animals’ filthy water supplies. Even worse: many animals did not survive. Officials discovered the corpses of many deceased animals scattered around the property, decaying.

While many animals were lucky in that they survived long enough to be relocated, others were so sick and mistreated, they died after being rescued — not even making it to veterinarians or rescue shelters. Authorities have since charged the man with 2,700 counts of animal abuse, including neglect and aggravated cruelty to animals. But the real question is how the situation got this bad. Somehow, an individual was allowed to acquire upwards of 400 animals — and keep them until the situation reached a crisis point. Pennsylvania must strengthen its laws about adopting or purchasing live farm animals or pets, and must also perform more routine checks of animal welfare on farms. Sign the petition to demand more stringent animal protection laws and better oversight of livestock’s wellbeing in Pennsylvania!
