Cat Guinness & Dog Maggie Love

AlStrays is all about re-homing rescued cats, but occasionally I do help a very special dog. Maggie the German Shepherd cross puppy IS one such dog.

Maggie drove to Germany on March 11th with her best friend Guinness the black cat! She loves cats and her buddy in particular, having been rescued from the local vet by Matt, and then lived for 3 months surrounded by cats inside and outside his house. Both Maggie and Guinness lost their mothers in horrible circumstances very young, and then found each other. This is a lovely tale of how animals that traditionally shouldn’t get along, have chosen to be great friends.

Maggie was found starving next to the body of her dead mother, whom we think had been poisoned, whilst Guinness was the only survivor of the poison that we know killed his mother and her other kittens. He was VERY traumatised and took a long time to trust people. He came to Matt’s from PAWs at about 4 months old and spent the next 8 months building his confidence with the other rescue cats there. Matt was actually going to keep him, until it became very clear that his best friend was 6 month old Maggie.

If Guinness caught a mouse, he brought it to share with Maggie, and when it was time for Maggie to go into her puppy cage, he would often chose to join her. They spent cold evenings this winter cuddled together by the fire, and they love to run and play and mock fight. If Guinness was lying lazily in the sun, or hiding under a hedge for a sleep, Maggie has been known to pull him out by his tail to play with her, but she seems always to know how to be more gentle with her small friend.

They have now been in Germany for about 6 weeks in a lovely foster home, who is enjoying having them both. Maggie is growing fast, and in the latest pictures both look really well.

The recent great news is that a family with 2 young children, and a big house with a garden, are interested in them. They have recently lost their old dog and cat, and this pair seem just what this animal loving family are looking for. Fingers crossed it will work out for them.
