AlStrays from a re-homing point of view IS principally about cats. I work with cat rescue centres and Katzenherzen, a charity in Germany, to re-home cats. Every so often however we all stray into new territory, and Gitana is one lucky dog that happened to walk up to the right person. In the past dogs in need from Almerimar have been able to go to the local protectora and be re-homed from there. Now they are not taking dogs from here, but as Gitana stole my heart immediately, I had to help her, and fortunately Kerstin from Katzenherzen felt the same way and has found her a lovely adoptant.
She is an exception though. Kerstin only advertises the occasional cat loving dog, and neither I nor the girls in Germany have time to do more than we already do; for us the cats are enough work. It has however been interesting, learning about dog vaccinations and treatment, and Pam’s Ankara booksales will be helping with the cost of the rather more expensive sterilisation etc.
Gitana IS gorgeous. She is a German Shepherd cross puppy of now about 9 months, playful and loving and completely non aggressive to humans, other dogs and even cats. She came to ask me for help one afternoon outside out apartment block and cried when I went inside without her. Within an hour I had a plan but Gitana had disappeared, and we then had to wait until the following day when Kay rang from the Ankara, to say they were feeding her ham to keep her there! Pam and I took her straight to my vet in Almeria where she lay calmly in the waiting room, un-concerned by the other animals, and at the end of her initial treatments she fell asleep on Miguel’s examination table, tired and happy to be safe.
She has also been lucky in that I was able to find her a proper foster place, where she is being well fed, played with, loved, and even lead trained, while she waits for transport to Germany on March 16th. A family is waiting there to give her a very happy life and I am very pleased to have been able to help her, and before she had spent more than a few days on the street. Enjoy the photos and video. I am sure that you will love her too.
