Innocent animals are not safe from the weapons of war

War Is Bad for All Living Things. Ukrainian Shelter Animals, Pets, and Strays Are Suffering.

Putin’s reckless attacks on Ukraine have been devastating, with the UN reporting that almost 1,500 civilians have been injured and over 900 killed as of March 20. On top of the impacts felt by humans, our animal companions have suffered greatly, too. Often the overlooked victims of war, strays, pets, and shelter animals throughout Ukraine are fighting to survive Putin’s violent invasion.

The brave Ukrainians who are keeping shelter doors open to take in strays and pets displaced by the conflict are an inspiration to all of us, caring for animals whose families have had to make the heartbreaking decision to leave them behind as they seek refuge in neighboring countries. But the conflict in Ukraine means that deliveries of food and vital medicines can’t always make it to the animals in need. Meanwhile, deadly airstrikes are terrorizing shelter animals and strays alike — there are reports that pets are dying from heart attacks and bullets.

The reality is that these shelters shouldn’t be forced to take care of so many pets under such brutal conditions in the first place. Every death from war is a preventable death — including those suffered by animals.  Sign the petition now to tell Putin: protect Ukrainians and their animals! End the invasion now!
