Save 10,000 Dogs from Slaughter

Every year, 10,000 dogs are murdered in Yulin, China as part of a festival to mark the summer solstice. The event has been canceled before thanks to an online campaign, but unless we speak up now it’s coming back this year.

Did you know that in a town called Yulin in China, people slaughter 10,000 dogs in June as part of a summer solstice “festival?” Patricia Losch started a petition on Care2 to stop this year’s festival and save these dogs from slaughter

Officials claim the dogs that are killed are bred on farms, but local animal activists say that many are stray dogs or even pets that are kidnapped from their owners. These poor, terrified animals are stuffed into crates and trucked to the festival by the hundreds. People beat these innocent dogs to death with bamboo poles, because they believe that it “adds flavor.”

In 2011, the festival was canceled because of an online campaign, but last year it came back. We can stop the murder of these dogs, but only if enough of us take action and pressure officials in Yulin to cancel the festival.
