Saving a beached whale is no small feat

It’s never good when the rescue hotline starts ringing very early in the morning.

My mind begins to race. Is it a seal entangled in fishing gear? A group of stranded dolphins?

In this case, it was a bigger deal, literally – a stranded minke whale in Wellfleet Harbor in the USA.
He appeared healthy, and the quick health assessment and blood workup we did supported that. But he strained to take each breath – whales aren’t made for this, their body weight makes it hard to get air in their lungs. We needed to try to get him back into deep water ASAP.

But how? And were we already too late to save him? Find out what happened next in this one-of-a-kind whale rescue.
