Seven Horses Died at the Biggest Stage in the World for Horse Racing. Race Horses Deserve Better!
In the week leading up to the Kentucky Derby horse race, seven horses died. While these deaths are tragic, the news is not surprising to those familiar with the sport.
Trainers regularly push horses to the point of exhaustion and force them to race prematurely. It’s a recipe for disaster — and death. Horses are doing what we ask of them, and in return, they are treated like cars.
Horse racing in the U.S. has a dangerous lack of regulations, leading to a shocking rate of euthanasia compared to other countries. According to the Jockey Club, a leading industry organization, more than 7,200 horses died in races from 2009 to 2021.
Last year, Congress created the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) to finally regulate horse racing, but it has faced constant legal challenges and pushback from its own community. Now, HISA needs to do its job!
